Trauma therapy (or trauma-focussed psychological interventions) refers to therapies targeted at alleviating the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These interventions follow evidence-based protocols that have been found to support trauma recovery by:
reducing the impact of unwanted and distressing thoughts and memories of traumatic events
relaxing the ‘wound-up, on-edge’ hyperarousal symptoms of trauma
shifting unhelpful beliefs about the causes and consequences of the traumatic event that have kept a person ‘stuck’ and unable to move on with life after the event
reconnecting with feelings, sensations and experiences that have been previously ‘numbed’.
By alleviating these core symptoms of PTSD, we create the opportunity to move from a place of ‘protection’ to ‘connection’. With the body and mind no longer stuck in survival mode, meaningful connection can be re-established: with oneself, one’s purpose, and the people in one’s life.
Some of the evidence-based trauma treatment protocols offered at Kinship Psychology include Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).
You can talk to us or your treating medical practitioner about whether trauma therapy could benefit you.
